Tip: The biggest news from the NHL in July

Patrice Bergeron
Even though the premiere of the 2023/24 season is still a few months away, the NHL continues to make headlines. We summarize some of the biggest events of July.

Below, we have summarized some of the most exciting news from the NHL over the past month.

The legendary career of Patrice Bergeron comes to an end

After 1,294 NHL games and an additional 170 playoff matches, Patrice Bergeron announced his retirement from hockey. The 38-year-old explained his decision to leave the NHL and Boston Bruins during a press conference, citing reduced motivation. One of the best all-round players of all time, Bergeron leaves behind an impressive career with a Stanley Cup victory with the Bruins in 2011, two Olympic gold medals, and six Selke Trophies for the best defensive forward. Bergeron looks forward to focusing on his family life, having recently welcomed his fourth child. Truly a legendary player who will be missed in the hockey world.

Forward Vladimir Tarasenko signs a 1-year deal with the Senators

Vladimir Tarasenko, a coveted forward on the free agent market, has signed a one-year contract with the Ottawa Senators worth five million dollars. The natural goal scorer and underrated playmaker, who previously played for the St. Louis Blues and the New York Rangers, has accrued a total of 574 points in 675 career matches. His most notable success came in 2019 when he won the Stanley Cup with St. Louis. An exciting addition to the Ottawa Senators that further strengthens an already robust forward side. Could the 2023/24 season be when we see the Senators back in the playoffs?

Carolina Hurricanes secure Sebastian Aho for the upcoming eight years

Since 2016, Sebastian Aho has been a part of the Carolina Hurricanes organization, and he has now signed a contract extending through to 2032. The deal, starting in the 2024/25 season, guarantees Aho an annual salary of $9.75 million. Carolina Hurricanes' General Manager, Don Waddell, praised Aho's leadership both on and off the ice. The club also extended contracts with goalkeepers Antti Raanta and Frederik Andersen, captain Jordan Staal, and forward Jesper Fast, and signed new contracts with defenders Tony DeAngelo, Dmitry Orlov, and forwards Michael Bunting and Brendan Lemieux. The future looks bright for the Hurricanes.
